They are follicles that have a wider than normal opening which filled with the plugs of sebum and sloughed-off cells and have undergone a chemical reaction resulting in the oxidation of melanin. This gives the material in the follicle the typical black color. Many people have a habit of picking the blackheads, to try to squeeze the 'dirt' out. However, it can cause inflammation in the dermis and create wounds and scars at the end.
