What is the cause of 'vessel overgrowth'?
Vessel overgrowth is formed by an increased number of vessels filled with blood. The cause of vessel overgrowth is unknown and it may even appear on newborns. However, it is believed that UV exposure is somehow related to such problem. The shape and size of vessel overgrowth is irregular and very different among different people. But they are usually round and raised in red to reddish-purple color.
For infants who are found to have vessel overgrowth, it is better to ask for doctor's evaluation and confirm what type of vessel overgrowth it belongs to. Most of the vessel overgrowth disappear on their own, but if it is a type called 'port wine stain', it must be handled with care. As for adults, cherry vessel overgrowth is the most common type and always seen on face, chest, back or hands. It can appear on its own or in multiple lesions.
