Can Post Acne Pigments and Acne Scars be treated?

Post acne pigments and scars are different kinds of skin problems caused by mistreated acnes, but they can be treated by different laser machines with satisfying results.

Post acne pigments are discoloration of the skin formed in the deeper layer (dermis), it is called 'post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)' in medical term. When the skin is under inflammatory condition (i.e. when active acne grows), it triggers the skin to produce excess melanin. These pigments should fade away over time, yet the length of time is different in every case depending on how serious the inflammation is. The pigments can last for years and hence affect one's appearance for a very long time.

PIH can be easily treated by common laser such as Q-switched 1064nm laser, which can break down the melanin accumulated in the dermis and hence speeds up the fading process. Moreover, laser can also help to remove oil and dirt inside the pores, which can minimize the chance of further growth of acnes and pimples. It is important because controlling further growth of acnes can avoid another PIH.

Acne scar is another acne-related and skin structural problem and it is more difficult to treat comparing with PIH. There are different types of acne scars: boxcar scar, rolling scar and ice-pricked scar. Doctors would advise the most suitable treatment according to the type of scars. However, acne scar is a permanent problem and no treatment can achieve 100% improvement. Using the latest fractional laser technology, acne scars can be treated satisfactorily with minimal downtime and risks. Prevention is always the best way is to avoid acne scars. When there is acne outbreak, we should not squeeze them or apply non-prescribed medication, because the main cause of scarring is due to these mistreatments. We should seek for professional medical advice in order to avoid any delay of treatment which would cost more time and money in the long run.
